Baker is one of the 1 in 10 in the US!!

According to a new video from (, only 1 in 10 schools in the US offers a course in coding (computer programming), and Baker is part of that select group of schools. Baker High School is the first school in the Mobile County Public School System to offer AP Computer Science A. This course covers a breadth of knowledge about computer science, but the main focus of the course is JAVA programming. The course emphasizes object-oriented programming methodology with a concentration on problem solving and algorithm development, and includes the study of data structures, design, and abstraction.

Baker is one of the 1 in 10 in Alabama!

Sandy Falgout, computer science teacher at Baker, has been chosen as one of 10 teachers in the state to teach a brand new course, Computer Science Principles. CS Principles is a one-credit course designed to introduce students to the central ideas of computing and computer science, to instill ideas and practices of computational thinking, and to have students engage in activities that show how computing and computer science change the world. Currently CS Principles is an honors level course at Baker and is expected to debut as an AP course (with AP exam for college credit) in 2016-17. Ms. Falgout is a participant in the first year of CS4Alabama, a project which is funded by a National Science Foundation grant, whose goal to have 50 teachers teaching this course in Alabama in the next 3 years. The grant was awarded to Dr. Jeff Gray at the University of Alabama and A+ College Ready (more info at

Ms. Falgout is thrilled to be part of this exciting new endeavor. Computer Science is a growing area in the US with projected job openings far overshadowing the number of college graduates.
